The University of Tokyo led the 2026 National Public Service Examination rankings with 458 successful candidates, an increase of 131 from the previous year. This growth is largely attributed to the newly established ‘Liberal Arts Category’ in the spring examination.

Kyoto University ranked second with 180 successful candidates, and Waseda University ranked third with 156, marking the highest number among private universities.

Further analysis of employment trends indicates that while elite universities dominate certain sectors, such as major trading companies, other industries exhibit more diverse hiring patterns. For example, companies like ANA show a lower ratio of graduates from elite institutions, suggesting that entrance exam difficulty is not the sole predictor of employment success at major corporations.
