Sources: 28. Developments: 4. The 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain, are currently underway, running from September 23 to 27. The event serves as the season finale for the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS), encompassing elite, U23, junior, para-triathlon, and mixed relay categories, as well as aquabike events. This championship marks the final WTCS Grand Final before a scheduled format change in 2027. The competition features over 5,000 athletes from approximately 83 to 100 countries. In the women’s elite race, Cassandre Beaugrand enters as the heavy favorite following a perfect regular season. She maintains a 225-point lead over Beth Potter; a podium finish would secure Beaugrand the overall world championship title. Other notable contenders include Tilda Månsson and defending champion Lisa Tertsch. In the elite men’s division, Portuguese athlete Vasco Vilaça leads the standings. Vilaça has the opportunity to become the first Portuguese athlete to claim the men’s world title, provided he secures a top-five finish. His primary rival is the reigning world champion, Matt Hauser, alongside other contenders such as Hayden Wilde and Alex Yee. Additionally, Brazilian triathlete Wilson Oliveira Paulino is competing in the Sprint category. In the U23 World Championships component, several Spanish athletes have emerged as strong medal contenders, including Izan Edo and Pelayo González in the men’s division, and Ana Carballo and Maite Jiménez-Orta in the women’s division. They face significant competition from French and British athletes. The championship is projected to generate an economic return of approximately 45 million euros, impacting Pontevedra and surrounding areas such as Poio, Sanxenxo, and Vigo. Local hospitality sectors report reservation rates exceeding 95%, with an expected attendance of roughly 20,000 people. ## Claims - Cassandre Beaugrand leads the women's standings with 4,000 points.
