Battery energy storage projects in Australia are advancing to support grid stability and renewable energy integration. In New South Wales, the Waratah Super Battery, built by Akaysha Energy at the former Munmorah coal-fired power station site, has reached full commercial operations. This 850 MW facility provides 1,680 MWh of storage capacity and is intended to act as a ‘shock absorber’ for the grid.

Following commissioning, the Waratah Super Battery is now operating at full capacity and serves the System Integrity Protection Scheme (SIPS). Designed to act as a ‘giant buffer’ for the New South Wales electricity grid, the facility is engineered to respond rapidly to grid disturbances by discharging electricity during line failures or overloads. This capability helps stabilize the system as aging coal-fired power plants are decommissioned. Recent tests demonstrated the battery’s ability to supply an average of 700 MW for two hours. Although the project faced delays due to technical issues with damaged transformers and the financial collapse of a primary supplier, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has granted final authorization for full operation. New South Wales Energy and Climate Minister Penny Sharpe described the project as a ‘decisive step toward a reliable, modern, and renewable-friendly energy system.’

Furthering regional infrastructure, the New South Wales Government granted State Significant Development Approval for the Stoney Creek Battery Energy Storage System near Narrabri. Developed by Enervest and owned by Energy Vault, the 125MW/1GWh project is designed to provide eight hours of dispatchable storage and is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2028.
