Netflix has released its seven-episode miniseries adaptation of John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’, directed and showrun by Zoe Kazan. The production, filmed in New Zealand to recreate the Salinas Valley, shifts narrative focus toward the character Cathy Ames, portrayed by Florence Pugh.

While the adaptation makes structural changes to fit the television format—such as reducing the role of the Hamilton family—it explores themes of generational trauma, familial rivalry, and the struggle between good and evil through the saga of the Trask family. The narrative spans from the Civil War to the end of World War I, following the Trask brothers, Adam and Charles, and their descendants. The series is written and produced by Kazan, the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 film adaptation.

The series has received strong initial marks, including an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though critical reception remains mixed. While some reviews praise the visual scale and Pugh’s “visceral performance,” other critics have described the pacing as “rushed” or “slow-paced,” and the direction as “literal-minded,” suggesting it lacks directorial verve despite high-quality production design.

The premiere was marked by a New York event hosted by Vanity Fair and Netflix executives. The cast also includes Mike Faist, Christopher Abbott, Tracy Letts, and Ciarán Hinds. To maintain the early 20th-century period setting, the production utilized New Zealand locations such as Ōamaru, Dunedin, Central Otago, and Auckland to recreate the American landscape.
