The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a prolonged phase of stalemate. Following a September 14 Iranian cruise missile attack in the Strait of Hormuz that injured eight Marines, the United States has maintained a significant naval presence to protect merchant shipping from drone attacks and enforce a blockade. To sustain these operations, the USS Theodore Roosevelt has departed San Diego for a deployment expected to last seven to eight months, relieving the USS George Washington. This vessel marks the fifth U.S. aircraft carrier committed to the conflict. The Pentagon has also extended the regional presence of logistics units, command structures, and elements of the 82nd Airborne Division through 2027. Economic and political tensions remain high. Oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped from 20 million to approximately 15 million barrels per day. The U.S. naval blockade has impacted Iranian maritime operations, leaving at least 20 empty tankers adrift near Sri Lanka and stalling other vessels near Malaysia as ports avoid U.S. sanctions. Internally, the Iranian regime faces friction between President Masoud Pezeshkian, who seeks diplomatic resolutions, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which favors continued resistance. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: United States increases naval presence in Middle East amid Iran conflict The conflict with Iran persists as the U.S. deploys the USS Theodore Roosevelt to the Middle East amid a naval blockade and internal Iranian political divisions between leadership and the Revolutionary Guard. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/united-states-increases-naval-presence-in-middle-east-amid-iran-conflict ### 2026-09-28: USS Theodore Roosevelt deploys to Middle East amid Iran war The USS Theodore Roosevelt has deployed to the Middle East to relieve the USS George Washington, marking the fifth U.S. aircraft carrier committed to operations during the ongoing war with Iran. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/uss-theodore-roosevelt-deploys-to-middle-east-amid-iran-war --- Cite as: US-Iran conflict escalation.
