Spanning 9,341 hectares, the area was established through Ministerial Diploma No. 69/2026 to protect water sources, local livelihoods, and unique species via participatory management. This process was supported by the EU-funded PROMOVE Biodiversidade program. Following this designation, the Mozambican Conservation Group met in Maputo in late September to coordinate biodiversity strategies for 2027. Chaired by the Secretary of State for Land and Environment, Gustavo Sobrinho Dgedge, the meeting addressed the need for financial sustainability and the valuation of natural capital as external funding projects conclude. Discussions focused on law enforcement, mitigating human-wildlife conflict, and reforming the assessment of protected areas through collaboration between the government, the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), the private sector, and NGOs. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-01: Mozambique Conservation Group meets to discuss 2027 biodiversity strategies Mozambique's Conservation Group met in Maputo to discuss biodiversity management, financial sustainability for protected areas, and strategic reforms for the 2027 conservation cycle. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mozambique-conservation-group-meets-to-discuss-2027-biodiversity-strategies ### 2026-09-12: Monte Mabu designated as Community Conservation Area in Mozambique Monte Mabu in Mozambique has been officially designated as a 9,341-hectare Community Conservation Area to protect biodiversity and support local livelihoods through participatory management. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/monte-mabu-designated-as-community-conservation-area-in-mozambique --- Cite as: Mozambique biodiversity conservation and management.
