Developments: 2. The Japan national football team won the 2026 Kirin Cup after defeating New Zealand 2-1 in the final at the National Stadium. Ayase Ueda scored the opening goal in the 28th minute, but New Zealand equalized shortly after via Ben Old. Ritsu Doan secured the victory in the 71st minute following a cross from Keito Nakamura. This win marks Japan’s 12th tournament win, their first Kirin Cup title in 15 years, and their fourth consecutive victory in the series, following previous matches against Uruguay, Venezuela, and Ecuador. During the final, Japan utilized a 4-2-3-1 formation, a tactical shift from the 3-4-2-1 system used in earlier matches. This shift included using Junya Ito as a right-back to increase offensive variety. Manager Hajime Moriyasu described this change as a “planned challenge intended to expand the team’s options ahead of the upcoming Asian Cup.” Statistically, Japan maintained 75% possession and recorded 24 shots compared to New Zealand’s 5. Ayase Ueda’s performance was particularly notable, as he scored in four consecutive matches during this international series, including goals against Uruguay and Venezuela. Following the championship, Moriyasu credited the players for their physical resilience and tactical implementation. However, player Hiroki Ito noted that while the series demonstrated progress, addressing vulnerabilities to counter-attacks remains a “key priority for the team’s next phase of development.” Analysts have further noted challenges regarding Japan’s ability to break down defensive blocks and vulnerabilities to long balls. Additionally, the match served as a potential final domestic appearance for Moriyasu, who is scheduled to step down following the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: Japan wins Kirin Cup 2026 after defeating New Zealand Japan won the Kirin Cup 2026 by defeating New Zealand 2-1, with goals from Ayase Ueda and Ritsu Doan.
