The Academy honored her for a “bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.” Carson, a 76-year-old professor of classics born in Toronto, was in Reykjavík, Iceland, when she received the news on October 8, 2026, describing the announcement as “crazy.” Her work is recognized for blurring genre boundaries by blending poetry, prose, essay, autobiography, and drama, often creating “literary constellations” by placing disparate historical figures and texts in dialogue. Her literary influence extends to various international contexts. In Italy, her work is brought to readers through the translations of Patrizio Ceccagnoli, an Umbrian scholar and professor at the University of Kansas. Ceccagnoli’s translations include works that reference the historical and artistic heritage of Perugia, such as the painter Perugino. Additionally, Carson’s critical reach includes contemporary music; she recently authored a review of the singer Rosalía for the London Review of Books. Her notable publications include “Autobiography of Red,” “Eros the Bittersweet,” “Nox”—written in memory of her brother, Michael—and “The Beauty of the Husband.” Her previous accolades include the T. S. Eliot Prize and the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature. Beyond her literary and academic contributions, Carson has gained public attention for her personal approach to living with Parkinson’s disease. The prize includes a gold medal and 12 million Swedish kronor, which Carson intends to use to support charitable causes, including Doctors Without Borders. She is scheduled to officially receive the prize in Stockholm on December 10. ## Claims - The value of the Nobel Prize this year is 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately 1.2 million US dollars.
