Sources: 222. Developments: 4. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City resulted in the shooting of Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national. During the attempt to arrest Belgal, at least one agent fired seven rounds at his vehicle, striking him in the neck. A five-year-old child was present in the backseat but escaped physical injury. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defended the agents, stating that Belgal used his vehicle as a weapon by accelerating toward officers and striking two official vehicles. DHS officials noted they were unaware a child was in the car at the time of the shooting, though they later asserted that Belgal was aware of the child’s presence and chose to flee, thereby endangering them. Federal authorities identified Belgal as a suspected member of the Trinitarios gang with a criminal history including theft, assault, armed robbery, and pending charges related to the sale of fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin. The incident has escalated into a confrontation between New York City officials and the federal government. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the event as an “outrage,” demanding an immediate halt to all ICE operations in the city, calling for the agency to be abolished, and requesting Belgal’s release from federal custody. In response, Trump administration border czar Tom Homan stated that federal immigration enforcement will continue in New York City and state regardless of the mayor’s demands. While President Trump has characterized the agents as “heroes,” Senator Jacky Rosen has called for a full, independent investigation. Protesters continue to demonstrate in Manhattan, calling for the abolition of the agency. ## Claims - Oscar Belgal was shot in the neck during the encounter.
