Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka has established himself as a key player for the club following a period of struggle during the 2025/26 season.

After initially finding it difficult to adapt to the physical intensity of the Premier League, Tanaka regained his starting position through persistence and by refusing to request a transfer during periods of limited playing time. His resurgence has reportedly impacted the squad hierarchy, specifically affecting midfielder Ilia Gruev, who has struggled to secure a place in the manager's plans. This shift has led to speculation regarding a potential departure for Gruev during the January 2027 transfer window.

Manager Daniel Farke has praised Tanaka’s exceptional recent performances while noting his intense self-discipline. Farke shared an anecdote regarding Tanaka’s strictness with himself, mentioning that he confiscated the player's gloves during a training session in 25-degree weather to ensure the squad maintains the physical toughness required for the league's intense duels and tackles.
