Research published in the ‘International Journal of Cancer’ and involving data from the ‘Million Women Study’ and the ‘UK Biobank’ has linked the consumption of very hot tea or coffee to an increased risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Analyzing data from approximately 977,000 adults, researchers found that individuals who prefer ‘very hot’ beverages face a relative risk more than triple that of those who drink warm beverages. Those preferring ‘hot’ drinks showed a 69 percent higher relative risk, while consuming six or more hot beverages daily increased risk by 71 percent.

The findings align with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification of hot beverages as ‘probably carcinogenic’, noting that 65 degrees Celsius serves as a threshold for potential harm. The studies indicated no significant difference in risk between tea and coffee drinkers, and the addition of milk did not appear to mitigate the temperature-related risks.
