The Winnipeg Jets began the season with a 3-0-1 record under head coach Scott Arniel. During early October 2026, the team managed an injury to defenseman Josh Morrissey, relying on defensive depth to maintain a .924 save percentage.

By mid-October, the Jets held a 4-1-2 record and occupied third place in the Central Division. The team faced roster challenges including a holdout by goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, which resulted in Stuart Skinner serving as the primary netminder.

On October 17, 2026, the Jets suffered their first regulation home loss of the season, falling 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes at the Canada Life Centre. Nikolaj Ehlers, a former Jet, scored a decisive power-play goal early in the third period to secure the win for Carolina. While Mark Scheifele and Alex Iafallo provided the scoring for Winnipeg, the loss brought the Jets' record to 4-2-2. The Hurricanes victory extended their winning streak to seven games.
