The documentary ‘Once Upon a Time in Harlem’ explores the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance by capturing a 1972 gathering at Duke Ellington’s townhouse. Hosted by filmmaker William Greaves, the event brought together poets, musicians, scholars, and politicians to discuss their intellectual and creative heritage.

Originally conceived as a project titled ‘From These Roots,’ the 16mm footage remained unreleased for decades. Following the death of William Greaves in 2014, his widow, Louise Aarchambault Greaves, resolved to restore the footage. His son, David Greaves, subsequently directed the completion of the film.

The documentary, which utilizes nearly 60,000 feet of film, premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and held a special screening at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
