During campaign rallies in Ohio and Michigan, former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump, focusing on his administration’s priorities and aesthetic choices. Obama mocked Trump’s extensive White House renovation projects, including the installation of a helicopter pad, the construction of a large ballroom, and the replacement of the Rose Garden's lawn with limestone paving. He specifically ridiculed the use of gold decor, quipping that the president has “got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.” Obama suggested Trump’s preoccupation with home improvements made him suited for “HGTV” at the expense of addressing the cost of living and foreign policy.

In a Cleveland rally, Obama used these criticisms to endorse Democratic candidates, including Amy Acton for governor and Sherrod Brown for the U.S. Senate. Trump responded on social media, labeling Obama “grossly incompetent” regarding the Iran nuclear deal, and later defended his design style by stating the comparison proved Obama was a “terrible president.”

Following the remarks, Rick McCormack, a former design executive for The Cheesecake Factory, stated he did not find the comparison humorous. McCormack noted it was “sad” that political pettiness would generate such commentary and clarified that the restaurant's actual aesthetic does not feature the heavy gold detailing described by Obama.
