Castro, Italy, has been selected to host the 2028 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon Elite and Master World Championships on October 14 and 15, 2028. Organized by A.S.D. Ciclo Club Spongano as part of the X Legend series, the event marks the return of world championship cycling to the Puglia region for the first time since 2003.

The race course is planned to traverse the Salento Adriatic coast, including locations such as Ortelle, Santa Cesarea Terme, and Otranto. To prepare for the championships, the Italian MTB Marathon Championship will be held in 2027.

Local officials have emphasized the event’s importance for territorial promotion and tourism. Fabio Tarantino, President of the Province of Lecce, noted that the X Legend competition has evolved from a local Salento initiative into an internationally recognized circuit through the cooperation of volunteers, citizens, and local institutions.
