By mid-September, these tensions materialized into violent conflict. Clashes between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities at the Amiet joint market initially resulted in at least nine deaths and over 60 injuries following attacks on traders. 

On September 16, 2026, the violence intensified significantly. Following the separate killings of a Ngok Dinka man and a Misseriya man earlier in the week, fighting erupted at the Amiet Common Market, leaving at least 26 dead and 82 injured. The conflict involves the Ngok Dinka, permanent residents of the area, and the Misseriya, Arab pastoralists from Sudan who migrate south during the dry season. 

In response to the rising death toll, UNISFA has reinforced its security presence around Abyei town and the market to protect civilians. Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shreshta stated that the mission is “actively engaging with community leaders to encourage dialogue and peaceful coexistence.”
