In October 2026, Polish journalist and Gazeta Wyborcza editor-in-chief Adam Michnik marked his 80th birthday with a 24-part retrospective program titled ‘Alfabet Michnika’. The series explores his personal and political life alongside significant Polish and European historical events. During this period, Michnik commented on the decline of civil society in Russia following the war in Ukraine.

Later in the month, Michnik was awarded the Jerzy Giedroyc Special Prize by the Senate of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The award recognizes efforts to continue the legacy of the journal ‘Kultura’. The committee stated that Michnik has worked to “edit Poland and the Poles,” pursuing a modern, democratic, and European-integrated nation. In his acceptance, Michnik honored Giedroyc as a defender of values against xenophobia and emphasized the importance of respecting the national identities of Ukraine, Lithuania, and Belarus.
