Medical teams in Italy and Peru have successfully utilized advanced, minimally invasive cardiac procedures to treat premature infants with severe congenital heart conditions.

In Rome, specialists at Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital used a transcatheter procedure involving ultra-thin catheters, a stent, and pulmonary flow regulators to treat a one-kilogram infant born at 29 weeks. The intervention aimed to stabilize blood flow without the risks of open-heart surgery, resulting in the infant doubling his weight and breathing without mechanical ventilation.

Similarly, in Peru, the Instituto Nacional Cardiovascular (INCOR) performed a high-complexity hybrid procedure on a 1,600-gram infant born at 29 weeks. To treat coarctation of the aorta, surgeons accessed the carotid artery to allow interventional cardiologists to insert a metallic stent. This marked the first time such a procedure was conducted on a newborn of that low weight in Peru.
