The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has been engaged in both reconstruction efforts and preparedness training in Turkey.

In August 2026, AFAD President Ali Hamza Pehlivan and Yozgat Governor Mehmet Ali Özkan inspected newly constructed disaster housing in Ovacık Village, Kadışehri. These residences were built for families impacted by the 2024 earthquake centered in Sulusaray, Tokat.

Concurrently, AFAD launched a Regional Accreditation Camp at the Bulcuk Recreation Area in the Ilgın district of Konya. Running from August 28 to August 30, 2026, the program involves approximately 1,030 personnel and 103 teams from the Central Anatolia, Aegean, and Mediterranean regions. Konya Governor İbrahim Akın emphasized that disaster management must now account for climate-related threats such as floods, droughts, fires, and dust storms in addition to earthquakes.

Following the camp, President Pehlivan reported significant progress in Turkey’s accreditation efforts, noting a focus on a risk-oriented approach that integrates preparation, risk reduction, response, and recovery. To date, AFAD has accredited 636 teams across eight specialized categories, including urban search and rescue, nutrition, shelter, and water search and rescue. A total of 21,000 personnel have completed required training, while an additional 258 teams and roughly 7,500 personnel are currently undergoing training.

While AFAD maintains 5,000 permanent staff, Pehlivan noted the total search and rescue workforce reaches 175,000 when including the Turkish Armed Forces, gendarmerie, police, and other public agencies. The agency conducts an average of 75 drills annually to maintain readiness.
