The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has been evaluating potential changes to the AFC Asian Cup schedule. Initial considerations involved moving the tournament to even-numbered years to align with major competitions like the UEFA European Championship and Copa América. This shift was intended to accommodate a proposed ‘Asian Nations League.’

Such scheduling changes raised concerns regarding the Japan national football team, as a revised calendar could limit their ability to play international friendly matches against top-tier European and South American opponents. These matches are considered vital for player development and maintaining FIFA rankings for World Cup seeding.

Following these discussions, the AFC convened an emergency meeting to address the possibility of postponing the Asian Cup.
