Agricultural research organizations across Africa have introduced new potato and sweetpotato varieties designed to withstand climate stress, disease, and soil acidity. In Ethiopia, Malawi, and Mozambique, the International Potato Center (CIP) has partnered with national institutes to release crops targeting drought-prone areas, acidic soils, and pests.

In Uganda, the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) has approved four specific Irish potato varieties—NAROPOT 7, 8, 9, and 10—which are resistant to late blight and feature rapid maturity periods of 90 to 100 days. Following their official launch, NARO has transitioned to the harvesting and mass multiplication phase of these seeds. To ensure widespread availability, NARO is working with seed companies, cooperatives, and individual farmers to distribute clean seed, particularly to vulnerable highland regions like Kigezi.
