African financial trends continue to be defined by rising diaspora remittances and structural banking challenges. While Nigeria saw record monthly inflows of $947 million in July 2026, recent data from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) shows that Egypt has overtaken Nigeria as the continent’s top recipient, receiving $41.5 billion in 2025. Total diaspora remittances to Africa reached $124.2 billion in 2025, an 86 percent increase since 2016. This figure has surpassed both foreign direct investment and official development assistance as a primary source of external financing.

Key recipients include Egypt ($41.5 billion), Nigeria ($22.8 billion), Morocco ($13.7 billion), Ethiopia ($7.1 billion), and Kenya ($5 billion). Approximately $42 billion of these flows is directed toward rural areas. While three-quarters of these funds are used for immediate needs like food and housing, one-quarter supports long-term investments such as education and entrepreneurship.

Despite this liquidity, a banking paradox persists. In the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), high growth and the opening of over 1.4 million new accounts in 2024 have been accompanied by a ‘crowding-out effect’. High interest rates encourage banks to prioritize lending to governments through state bonds rather than financing productive sectors like SMEs, diverting capital away from local businesses.
