Nigeria is advancing its role in hosting continental youth sporting events. In late September 2026, Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, confirmed that preparations for Nigeria to host the 2027 African School Games in Abuja are proceeding as planned following a positive reception from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.

By mid-October 2026, the second Pan African School Games commenced in Lagos at James Hope College. This three-day competition involves approximately 400 student-athletes competing in football, swimming, and athletics. Organizers have rebranded the event from the ‘Africa School Games’ to the ‘Pan African School Games’ to reflect broader continental ambitions and to provide a platform for young athletes to secure international scholarships and professional opportunities.
