In Maputo, authorities are seeking support from the African Development Bank to improve wastewater treatment and drainage. The city currently collects only 60% of its daily waste, leading to accumulation in roadsides and coastal areas. Proposed long-term solutions include the construction of the KaTembe Sanitary Landfill and the rehabilitation of the Hulene landfill, with an emphasis on the circular economy by converting fecal sludge into agricultural fertilizer. Similarly, Burkina Faso has inaugurated a fecal sludge treatment plant in Naaba Kango, designed to convert dehydrated sludge into compost for soil fertilization. In Congo, government officials are coordinating with the Albayrak Group to enhance waste collection services in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire through the acquisition of new equipment and vehicles. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-25: African nations advance urban sanitation and waste management projects Burkina Faso has inaugurated a 2.2 billion FCFA sludge treatment plant in Ouahigouya, while Congo is upgrading waste collection in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire through new equipment from the Albayrak Group. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/african-nations-advance-urban-sanitation-and-waste-management-projects ### 2026-09-20: Maputo seeks African Development Bank support for waste management Maputo is seeking African Development Bank support to improve sanitation and waste management as the city struggles to collect 40% of its daily 1,366 tons of refuse. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/maputo-seeks-african-development-bank-support-for-waste-management --- Cite as: African urban sanitation and waste management initiatives.
