Agricultural and economic instability in Honduras has intensified due to climate conditions and rising costs. Initially, producers warned that a lack of financing and crop protection, such as parametric insurance, threatened the late-season planting cycle. This followed previous losses in basic grain production caused by drought.

By mid-October, the situation evolved into a broader crisis. The National Autonomous University of Honduras reported that approximately 1.88 million people face acute food insecurity, driven by low incomes and a nearly 50% increase in the cost of the urban basic food basket since 2019.

In addition to grain production issues, the aquaculture sector has been severely impacted by prolonged drought and high temperatures in the Gulf of Fonseca. Increased water salinity has forced 214 shrimp farms to halt operations, leading the industry to reduce its 2026 production target from 159 million pounds to 146 million pounds.
