In Bursa, the harvest for the geographically indicated ‘Bursa black’ fig has commenced. While favorable weather has resulted in higher yields, producers face significant economic pressure due to sharp price declines. Export prices, highly valued in European markets such as the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, dropped from an initial 130 lira to 80 lira, a substantial decrease from the 190–200 lira range seen last year. Domestic prices have also fallen to between 60 and 80 lira, with some purchasing firms reportedly halting acquisitions entirely.

Conversely, Noada Holding has reported a promising start to the season, noting that early Bursa figs exhibit excellent color, flavor, and quality. While initial stock has sold rapidly due to strong demand, experts anticipate market equilibrium as volumes increase. Fresh figs are reportedly gaining annual market share within European retail sectors, particularly in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, and Scandinavia.

To mitigate low prices, producers in Nazilli are pivoting toward ‘fig chips.’ By thinly slicing and shade-drying fresh figs, small businesses and households create a product that sells for 2 to 6 times the price of fresh or dried figs, offering improved income and employment.

In Ankara’s Beypazarı district, the black cumin harvest has also begun. Following successful small-scale trials, farmers have expanded production to approximately 800 decares. Due to high demand, farmers plan to process the bitter variety through sortex machines to sell as seed rather than raw product, with projections suggesting cultivation could reach 5,000 to 10,000 decares next year.
