Agricultural production in the Mersin province of Turkey continues through traditional harvests and expanded municipal support initiatives.

In the Mut district, the olive harvest is underway across approximately 269,000 decares of land containing roughly 13 million registered trees. While the Mut District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry anticipates a high yield of approximately 300,000 tons, local producers have reported that purchase prices, ranging from 10 to 60 TL depending on variety and sieve size, are lower than in previous years.

The Mersin Metropolitan Municipality’s almond sapling distribution project has reached a milestone in the Gülnar district. Producers who received saplings through a 50 percent grant program initiated in 2021 have begun their first harvest. To date, 34,204 saplings have been distributed across the province, with 23,288 located in Gülnar.

To address rising input costs, the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality has launched a comprehensive agricultural support package coordinated by the Department of Agricultural Services. This initiative includes 100 percent subsidized olive harvest machines for 347 producers in Mezitli, Toroslar, and Yenişehir, as well as solar camera systems for 296 beekeepers. Other distributions include 80 percent subsidized narcissus bulbs, totaling 250,000 units, and 108,000 cucumber seedlings in Aydıncık.

Through the ‘Hadi Gel Köyümüze Destek Verelim’ project, the municipality has also provided 100 small livestock and 16 tons of feed to producers in Anamur, Aydıncık, and Bozyazı. Additional support includes 5,370 almond saplings and equipment for 71 small-scale fishermen. Local officials, including Aydıncık Mayor Özkan Kılıçarpa and Department Head Abdullah Selçuk Şahutoğlu, have emphasized the necessity of municipal intervention to help farmers manage high production costs and increase income.
