The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Executive Board has awarded Ahmedabad, India, the hosting rights for the 2029 senior World Weightlifting Championships. This decision, announced during a meeting in Ningbo, China, marks the first time India will host the senior global competition.

The 2029 event is scheduled to serve as a qualifying competition for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which are also set to be hosted in India. Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha described the selection as a ‘proud moment for Indian sport,’ suggesting that hosting elite athletes domestically could inspire future generations of Indian weightlifters. Sahdev Yadav, President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, also called the announcement a ‘significant milestone’ for the sport within the country.
