The bankruptcy and liquidation of the steelmaker Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA) has resulted in a rising death toll among its former employees. As of late July 2026, the number of fatalities reached 85 following the death of Efraín Cobarrubias Rincón.

By mid-August, the death toll rose to 86 with the passing of Héctor Reyna Hinojos. Labor groups in Monclova, Coahuila, have criticized government authorities for what they describe as the “abandonment of the affected families” amid the ongoing financial crisis. 

While the court-ordered liquidation of the company is scheduled for September 25, workers and their families remain in a state of uncertainty regarding unpaid wages, benefits, and severance. Labor leaders are calling on federal judge Ruth Haggi Huerta to expedite the judicial process to secure economic stability for the thousands of families dependent on the resolution of the AHMSA case.
