Researchers in the United States are utilizing artificial intelligence to identify biomarkers that predict how individuals will respond to vaccines.

Initial research from Arizona State University involved analyzing blood samples from 4,089 participants to identify specific antibody patterns. The study identified ‘sentinel antibodies’—including those against Staphylococcus aureus and respiratory syncytial virus—that correlate with robust immune responses. This work included diverse groups, such as individuals with immunosuppressive conditions like HIV, cancer, and organ transplants.

Subsequent findings from the National Cancer Institute’s SeroNet program expanded on this by analyzing over 8,000 blood samples from more than 4,000 participants. This research, published in Cell Press, confirmed that pre-existing antibodies to common microbes can serve as universal antimicrobial signatures. These signatures were positively associated with the top 25% of high COVID-19 vaccine responders, suggesting that certain biomarkers can identify individuals who are more ‘immune-ready’ before vaccination occurs.
