Alberts Šmits, an 18-year-old Latvian defenseman and 2026 fifth overall pick, transitioned from a strong preseason with the New York Rangers to his official NHL debut.

During his debut in a road game against the Boston Bruins, Šmits logged 16 minutes and 54 seconds of ice time as part of the third defensive pairing. He recorded two hits and one blocked shot, though he finished with a -1 rating as the Rangers lost 0-3. His appearance made him the first Latvian player to enter the league at age 18 and one of only five defensemen in the Rangers' 100-season history to debut at age 18 or younger.

Šmits followed his debut with a significant performance in the Rangers' first win of the season, a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. During that game, he recorded a +3 plus-minus rating—the highest among the visiting players—while logging 14 minutes and 9 seconds of ice time, including a hit and a blocked shot.
