Alex Ovechkin has experienced a slow start during his final NHL campaign with the Washington Capitals. Early in the 2026-27 season, the team maintained a strong 3-1-0 record despite a four-game scoring drought for Ovechkin. Head coach Spencer Carbery noted that while Ovechkin was creating opportunities, he was recording the least five-on-five ice time among the team's forwards.

By his tenth game of the season, Ovechkin triggered a $4.75 million performance bonus during a 4-3 overtime win against the Buffalo Sabres. Despite reaching this financial milestone, Ovechkin recorded no points in that game and played a career-low 11:43 of ice time. He has recorded four points in ten games thus far.
