Developments: 2. Algeria has initiated a large-scale reforestation campaign for the 2026-2027 season to restore ecosystems following devastating summer wildfires. The General Directorate of Forests (DGF) announced a nationwide effort to plant millions of trees across nearly 48,000 hectares. A major component of this initiative is the ‘Green Dam’ project, which aims to combat desertification and restore areas damaged by fire. While one report specifies a goal of planting 38.8 million trees, including forest, fruit, and forage species, another report highlights a specific seasonal target of approximately 1.2 million trees. Efforts are being concentrated in hard-hit regions such as the Jijel province, where the Soumaâ area will see the planting of 25,000 trees across 18 communes. This recovery work involves collaboration between the national army, civil protection services, and civil society. To support local nutrition and economies, the forestry department is prioritizing species like olive, chestnut, and carob trees. The campaign also includes educational outreach in schools to promote environmental preservation. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-26: Algeria launches national reforestation campaign to plant 1.2 million trees Algeria has initiated a national reforestation program to plant 1.2 million trees, focusing heavily on the Jijel region to recover areas devastated by recent summer wildfires. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/algeria-launches-national-reforestation-campaign-to-plant-12-million-trees ### 2026-10-23: Algeria launches massive 2026-2027 reforestation campaign Algeria is launching a national reforestation campaign to plant 38.8 million trees across nearly 48,000 hectares, focusing heavily on the Green Dam project to combat desertification. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/algeria-launches-massive-2026-2027-reforestation-campaign --- Cite as: Algeria national reforestation campaign.
