Alghero, Sardinia, is experiencing a demographic paradox where record tourism levels coincide with a continuous loss of local residents. Factors contributing to this depopulation include declining birth rates, an aging population, youth emigration, and job precariousness linked to the seasonal nature of employment. Local representatives have called for a special commission to develop strategies involving fiscal interventions and efforts to transform tourism into stable, year-round economic development.

Compounding these demographic challenges is a shift in the urban landscape. Local shops are increasingly closing or vacating premises to be repurposed into residential units and Bed & Breakfasts. Critics argue that this conversion into short-term rentals fails to provide long-term housing solutions for residents and creates tension between the traditional commercial landscape and a city increasingly oriented toward the tourism industry.
