Developments: 2. Ski resorts across the Alpine regions of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland are preparing for the upcoming winter season. In Tyrol, Austria, glacier locations such as Kaunertaler and Pitztaler have already begun operations, with further openings scheduled through October and November. Major resorts like Kitzbühel and Ischgl are expected to follow in November, while most remaining lifts are slated for early December. In Germany, the Zugspitze is anticipated to open in late November, with other regions like Oberstdorf and Sauerland targeting early December. However, the Association of German Cable Cars (VDS) notes that enthusiasts will face higher costs, reporting that average daily lift pass prices have increased by 4.2 percent compared to the previous year. In Switzerland, recent snowfall has improved seasonal outlooks for high-elevation areas. Glacier slopes in Saas-Fee and Zermatt are currently open, and the Diavolezza region is scheduled to begin operations in late October. While snow levels are being monitored, forecasts suggest a rising snow line in some western and northern Alpine regions, which could lead to rain at lower altitudes. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-23: Winter sports season approaches in Germany and Switzerland Ski resorts in Germany and Switzerland are preparing for the winter season, with openings starting in late October and November despite rising lift pass prices in Germany. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/winter-sports-season-approaches-in-germany-and-switzerland ### 2026-10-09: Tyrol ski resorts announce winter season opening dates Tyrol's ski resorts are set to open for the winter season, with glacier skiing starting in September and major resorts opening throughout November and December. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tyrol-ski-resorts-announce-winter-season-opening-dates --- Cite as: Alpine winter sports season preparations.
