The MGM+ eight-part miniseries ‘American Hostage’ premiered on September 20, 2026. The psychological thriller dramatizes a 1977 hostage crisis in Indianapolis, inspired by a true-crime podcast.

The series follows the true story of Tony Kiritsis, portrayed by Giovanni Ribisi, who took mortgage broker Richard Hall hostage for 63 hours following a real estate dispute. Kiritsis utilized a ‘dead man’s line’—a homemade shotgun modification—to prevent police intervention while demanding a public apology and $5 million. Jon Hamm stars as Fred Heckman, a prominent local news radio personality forced into the role of an intermediary between the kidnapper and authorities.

While the production has been noted for its strong ensemble cast, including Mireille Enos and Kristoffer Polaha, critical reception has been mixed. Some reviewers have commented on the series’ pacing and suggested the execution is “over-extended” and fails to resolve various storylines effectively.
