Amtrak is implementing its $8 billion Airo program to modernize passenger rail service, beginning with the Cascades route connecting Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver, British Columbia. The initiative aims to replace aging equipment from the 1970s with new Siemens-designed trainsets.

These new trains feature dual-mode electric and diesel propulsion, allowing operation on both electrified and non-electrified tracks without locomotive swaps. The Airo trains are capable of reaching speeds of 125 mph and can carry up to 317 passengers. 

While the initial rollout focuses on deploying eight trainsets to the Cascades corridor by 2026, Amtrak has a broader long-term objective to introduce more than 83 new trains across the Mid-Atlantic, Pennsylvania, and New England regions.
