The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are facing a significant reduction in air connectivity and a sharp increase in travel costs. Reports indicate that weekly flights between the islands and mainland India have decreased by approximately 42–50 percent compared to the previous year, dropping from roughly 72 flights per week in August 2025 to about 36 flights per week in August 2026. This reduction in capacity has driven airfares to major destinations like Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi to frequently exceed ₹28,000.

In response, local representatives and stakeholders have intensified efforts to seek government intervention. Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray has called for a high-level meeting with the Union Minister for Civil Aviation to address the impact on medical emergencies, education, and the local tourism sector.

Further advocacy is being led by the Andaman & Nicobar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ANCCI), which has engaged with the Lieutenant Governor and various Union Ministers, as well as major airline operators, to request increased flight frequency. Additionally, the Our Rights Organization has called for an “independent and transparent inquiry into airfare structures,” noting that high costs disproportionately burden students, senior citizens, and patients.
