In August 2026, FC Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen extended his contract with the club until 2028. To assist the club with financial registration requirements under the 1:1 rule, the Danish player accepted a salary reduction of more than 50 percent.

By September 2026, Christensen sustained a muscle tear in his left quadriceps during a La Liga match against Sevilla. Medical examinations confirmed the injury specifically affected the rectus femoris in his left thigh. The 30-year-old was forced to leave the pitch in the 59th minute following a challenge with Robbie Ure. Despite the injury, Christensen had provided an assist during the match.

Manager Hansi Flick confirmed the injury would sideline the defender for several weeks, preventing his participation in upcoming Nations League fixtures with the Denmark national team. While initial estimates suggested a recovery period of four to six weeks, some reports indicate the absence could extend up to two months. If the longer timeline is required, Christensen could miss up to eight matches, including five in La Liga and three in the Champions League, with notable absences including fixtures against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

A potential return is estimated for late November, possibly for the match against Villarreal. To cover the central defense during his absence, Flick is expected to rely on Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, Eric García, and Jules Koundé.
