During the launch of the 2027 Australian Open, Tennis Australia CEO Andrew Abdo was confirmed as the tournament director. Abdo outlined significant expansion plans, including a 45 per cent increase in the tournament’s footprint and the introduction of new facilities such as the AO Ballpark and the Grand Slam Oval.

His introduction to the role was marked by verbal errors during his speech, specifically misnaming tennis players Jannik Sinner and Elena Rybakina. These mistakes drew scrutiny from social media and tennis figures like Boris Becker. Abdo, a former NRL CEO, acknowledged the error regarding Sinner, whom he referred to as ‘Jacob Sinner’.
