The pilot reportedly applied aggressive braking to avoid a black dog running toward the runway, causing the aircraft to slide past the end of the strip and turn sideways. While no serious injuries were reported, 11 of the 12 people on board were taken to Mabaruma Hospital for evaluation. Following this incident, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) issued a warning regarding the increasing frequency of animals crossing aerodrome runways nationwide. The GCAA stated that the deliberate or negligent release of animals onto runways poses a direct threat to aviation safety. Trans Guyana Airways noted that hinterland airports are currently undergoing expansion but lack necessary supervision to prevent animal and human invasions. Under the Civil Aviation Act 2018, causing an animal to trespass on aerodrome land is a criminal offense punishable by fines and imprisonment. The GCAA has pledged to work with law enforcement to enforce these regulations. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-25: Guyana Civil Aviation Authority warns of animal runway incursions The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is warning of increased animal runway incursions following an aircraft excursion at Mabaruma airstrip, threatening passenger safety and legal penalties for offenders. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/guyana-civil-aviation-authority-warns-of-animal-runway-incursions ### 2026-09-17: Trans Guyana Airways aircraft veers off Mabaruma runway A Trans Guyana Airways aircraft veered off the Mabaruma runway in Guyana after the pilot braked to avoid a dog.
