Commemorations are being held across Greece to mark the 82nd anniversary of the liberation of various cities from German occupation in October 1944.

In Athens, ceremonies include the raising of the Greek flag on the Acropolis, attended by high-ranking officials. Historical accounts note that while the withdrawal from Athens was largely without combat, subsequent fighting occurred in Piraeus to protect energy infrastructure. The period following the liberation was characterized by public celebration alongside rising political tensions.

In Volos and Magnesia, officials and resistance organizations are honoring National Resistance fighters. Statements from local representatives emphasize the responsibility of maintaining historical truth and honoring those who sacrificed their lives.

In Larissa, Mayor Thanasis Mamakos issued a message commemorating the city’s liberation on October 23, 1944, marking the end of three and a half years of occupation. Mamakos honored citizens who resisted and suffered through hunger, fear, and executions. He noted that the anniversary serves as a reminder that “freedom, democracy, and peace are not guaranteed,” particularly in a modern era facing war and authoritarianism.
