The Apoera fire department in Suriname has faced repeated challenges in responding to fires due to critical equipment failures and a lack of resources.

In early October, a building on Kabalebolaan was completely destroyed after the fire department was unable to intervene. The response was hindered by a defective fire engine and the absence of a water tanker truck. Rayoncommandant Humphrey Veira described a sense of “profound helplessness” as the blaze consumed the property. Authorities noted that requests for a dedicated water tanker for the area had been ongoing.

By late October, the department faced further difficulties while battling a large fire near a fuel storage facility. Personnel were forced to use a police vehicle to transport a pump because of a non-functional fire truck. The pump itself partially failed during the operation. This incident followed a separate fire at a diesel storage site on October 19, where firefighters also required police assistance to move essential equipment.
