She officially assumed the role on October 28, succeeding Felix Klein. Von Schnurbein, a political scientist with extensive experience in the European Commission, described her new mandate as an “active defense of our democracy.” She emphasized the importance of identifying antisemitism across the political spectrum, including from the right, the left, and Islamism. Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt characterized her as a “proven expert in the fight against antisemitism.” Dr. Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, called the selection an “outstanding appointment,” noting that her leadership is critical amid rising challenges and the emergence of antisemitism disguised as anti-Zionism. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-30: Germany appoints von Schnurbein as new antisemitism commissioner Germany has appointed political scientist von Schnurbein as the new federal commissioner to combat antisemitism, emphasizing the need to identify hate speech across all political spectrums. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/germany-appoints-von-schnurbein-as-new-antisemitism-commissioner ### 2026-10-14: Katharina von Schnurbein appointed Germany's antisemitism commissioner Katharina von Schnurbein, former EU antisemitism commissioner, has been appointed Germany's new commissioner for Jewish life and the fight against antisemitism. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/katharina-von-schnurbein-appointed-germanys-antisemitism-commissioner --- Cite as: Appointment of Germany antisemitism commissioner.
