Pope Leo XIV appointed Giovanni Crippa as the new bishop of the Diocese of Palmeira dos Índios in Alagoas, Brazil. Crippa, an Italian-born cleric, was transferred from his previous role as the bishop of Ilhéus in Bahia.

Following the appointment, plans were established for Crippa to be installed as the 6th bishop of the diocese. His canonical installation ceremony is scheduled for November 29, 2026, at the Diocesan Cathedral. Before transitioning, he is set to conclude his tenure in Ilhéus with a final mass on November 14. For his new ministry, Crippa has selected the motto ‘In aedificationem corporis Christi’ (For the edification of the Body of Christ).
