A survey by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) indicates declining satisfaction levels among trainees, with only 64 percent of respondents reporting satisfaction. DGB state chair Susanne Wingertszahn identified stressors such as excessive working hours, insufficient compensation, long commutes, and poor mental health as primary drivers for this decline. To address these issues, Wingertszahn proposed measures including a training fund, affordable housing, and an apprentice transit ticket. Data from the Ministry of Labor in Mainz further illustrates the financial gap facing trainees. Last year, approximately 4.9 percent of the state’s 57,700 apprentices received vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe). This subsidy is intended for those whose compensation fails to meet estimated living costs of 822 euros, a figure that exceeds the current minimum first-year training compensation of 724 euros. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-10: Rheinland-Pfalz apprentices receive limited vocational training assistance In Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, nearly 5 percent of apprentices received vocational training assistance last year to cover living costs exceeding their base compensation. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/rheinland-pfalz-apprentices-receive-limited-vocational-training-assistance ### 2026-09-28: Rheinland-Pfalz apprentices report declining satisfaction levels A DGB survey shows apprentice satisfaction in Rheinland-Pfalz has dropped to 64 percent, driven by mental health concerns, low pay, and poor working conditions. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/rheinland-pfalz-apprentices-report-declining-satisfaction-levels --- Cite as: Apprentice welfare and training in Rheinland-Pfalz.
