In the village of Pień, researchers identified unusual 17th-century child burials, including one individual buried face down with an iron rod securing their feet and another with heavy stones placed on their shoulders and abdomen. Anthropologist Dr. Matteo Borrinni noted these may be ritualistic attempts to prevent the deceased from returning to the living, though researchers are awaiting genetic analysis to confirm the origins and health of the individuals. Other significant findings include the study of the Lusatian culture in Groszowice, where a biritual cemetery featuring both inhumation and cremation has been the subject of a museum exhibition. Additionally, excavations in Pławno at a Wielbark culture site—associated with the Goths—revealed a large, intact cremation mound. While the site had been disturbed by amateur digging in the 19th century, archaeologists have successfully reconstructed the construction stages of the burial mound. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-19: Archaeological discoveries reveal ancient burial rites in Poland New archaeological findings in Poland reveal insights into ancient burial rites, including a Lusatian culture exhibition in Groszowice and Wielbark culture excavations in Pławno. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/archaeological-discoveries-reveal-ancient-burial-rites-in-poland ### 2026-09-29: Pień, Poland: Unusual child burials discovered in 17th-century cemetery Archaeologists in Pień, Poland, have uncovered unusual 17th-century child burials, including remains buried face down and secured with iron rods, potentially linked to historical anti-vampire rituals. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/archaeologists-in-pie-discover-new-unusual-burials-in-poland --- Cite as: Archaeological burial discoveries in Poland.
