Recent findings within the Mandor wall sector suggest these pathways may have served a ritual rather than military purpose. Specialists from the Cusco Culture Directorate and the University of Warsaw noted that the elevated structure follows the natural terrain and is oriented toward Yanantin, a sacred mountain, aligning with Andean ceremonial practices and sacred geography.

Parallel to these archaeological developments, the Peruvian government has initiated the ‘Carrying Capacity and Acceptable Change Limit Study’. This 190-day project, executed by the firm ARS Progetti SPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, and Sernanp, aims to establish a scientific basis for managing visitor flows and heritage conservation. The study will follow four phases—planning, diagnosis, evaluation, and implementation—to analyze territorial conditions and the state of cultural and natural heritage. This initiative is part of the ‘Master Plan for the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu – Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park 2026-2031’, intended to balance sustainable tourism with the protection of the site.
