In the Bubastion Necropolis at Saqqara, researchers led by Hisham Al-Lithi of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities unearthed the tomb of Sekhentiu-Ptah, a high-ranking official of the Old Empire. His extensive titles included Royal Chamberlain, Overseer of all the King’s works, administrator of decrees, priest of Maat, and “guardian of the secrets of the royal decrees.” The tomb, located in the Bubasteion sector historically associated with the goddess Bastet, features a funerary chapel with an ornamental “false door” designed to symbolically connect the living with the deceased. Excavations revealed alabaster ritual tools and a system of burial shafts containing human remains, three sealed sarcophagi, and over 100 faience ushabti statues. Further discoveries at the Theban Necropolis revealed a tomb containing 16 mummies and the remains of at least four other individuals, including a mummified dog placed atop a man and a woman, suggesting a symbolic role for the animal in the afterlife. Recent work at the Mariette Cemetery in the Saqqara necropolis has focused on a 4,400-year-old mastaba dating to the late Fifth Dynasty during the reign of King Djedkare Isesi. A joint Egyptian-Spanish mission, led by the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, uncovered two funerary chapels within the structure. The first belonged to Yunmin, a high-ranking official who served as a judge, court director, and chief scribe.
