Initial discoveries focused on pre-Hispanic settlements such as Quiahuiztlan, a Totonac urban center and necropolis near Mount Bernal. This site served as a defensive location with visual dominance over the Gulf of Mexico. Similarly, the ancient city of Quauhtochco featured the El Fortín de Huatusco, a structure used for surveillance and territorial control that underwent modifications during the Mexica expansion around 1450.

Subsequent findings in the center of Veracruz have uncovered colonial-era remains. The exposure of ‘piedra múcara’ stone near the intersection of Ocampo and 5 de Mayo streets suggests the presence of foundations from the city’s time as a walled fortification. Researchers indicate these remains are likely near the former Santa Bárbara bastion, part of a system of nine defensive structures that once protected the city, including 18th-century military barracks.
